EEUU estudia enviar 3.000 soldados a Afganistán y ceder poder al Pentágono

El presidente de EEUU, Donald Trump, estudia una nueva estrategia para Afganistán que incluye el envío de 3.000 soldados y ceder poder al Pentágono, elaborada por asesores militares y en política exterior, según ha dado a conocer este martes The Washington Post.

De acuerdo con funcionarios estadounidenses consultados por el rotativo, el envío de más tropas tiene como objetivo devolver a la mesa de negociación a los talibanes, "cada vez más seguros" y combativos. Si Trump da el visto bueno al nuevo plan, el número de soldados estadounidenses pasaría de 8.400 a 11.400, y serían a partir de ahora los militares del Pentágono, y no la Casa Blanca, los responsables de retirar o desplegar nuevos militares.

Según The Washington Post, la estrategia nueva está ideada por el teniente general H.R. McMaster, asesor de Seguridad Nacional del presidente.

Estados Unidos tenía 100.000 soldados desplegados en Afganistán durante la presidencia de Barack Obama cuando en 2011 mató en el vecino Pakistán al líder de Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden. Los que se oponen a esta nueva estrategia intervencionista argumentan que ni siquiera entonces Obama logró concesiones militares de los talibanes.

Trump llegó a la Casa Blanca con la promesa de reducir el intervencionismo militar de Estados Unidos en el exterior, pero también con la de combatir al terrorismo. A mediados de abril utilizó por primera vez la mayor bomba no-nuclear, un gigantesco proyectil de diez toneladas, para destruir un complejo sistema de túneles del grupo terrorista Estado Islámico en Afganistán.
